Is the Stock Market Open Today? Trading Hours and Settlement Holiday for September 18

Is the stock market open on September 18? Yes, but with a settlement holiday. The Reserve Bank of India has announced that the government securities, foreign exchange, money, and rupee interest rate derivatives markets will be closed on September 18, 2024, for the Eid-e-Milad holiday.

While stock trading will continue, settlements will be postponed to the next day. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) confirmed that trade settlements due on September 18 will be processed on September 19, 2024, due to the settlement holiday.

The Maharashtra government shifted the Eid-e-Milad holiday to September 18 to avoid overlap with Ganesh immersion, prompting the RBI’s decision to declare a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881.

A settlement holiday means stock markets are open for trading, but transactions, including the transfer of securities and funds, are deferred until the next working day. Depositories like NSDL and CDSL are closed on these days.

Settlement holidays differ from stock market holidays, as trading can still occur, but settlements are delayed. Exchanges publish separate lists for settlement and trading holidays annually.
