This national holiday commemorates the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a pivotal figure in India’s struggle for independence, renowned for his principles of nonviolence and civil disobedience that inspired generations.

All trading activities, including equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB), will be paused. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also be closed for both trading sessions on October 2. Trading will resume on Thursday, October 3, allowing investors to return to the market after a day off.
Stock Market Trading Recap
On Tuesday, the Indian benchmark equity indices—the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50—closed slightly lower after a steady trading day. The BSE Sensex ended at 84,266.29, down by 33.49 points (0.04%), while the NSE Nifty50 closed at 25,796.90, a decline of 13.95 points (0.05%). Among the 50 stocks in the Nifty50, 29 saw losses, with IndusInd Bank, ONGC, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, and Tata Steel dropping by up to 2.66%. However, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra, Britannia Industries, Infosys, and Adani Enterprises gained up to 2.90%.
In the broader market, the Nifty SmallCap100 index increased by 0.79%, and the Nifty MidCap100 index rose by 0.34%. Year-to-date, the BSE Sensex has gained over 16%, and the Nifty 50 has risen by about 18%.

Stock Market Trading Duration
The Indian stock market usually operates from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM on weekdays (Monday to Friday). There is also a pre-open session from 9:00 AM to 9:07 AM on regular trading days. The markets are closed on weekends, specifically on Saturdays and Sundays.
Upcoming Stock Market Holidays in 2024
After the Gandhi Jayanti holiday on October 2, the Indian stock market will remain open for the remainder of October. The next holiday will be on November 1 for Diwali, during which the NSE and BSE will host a special one-hour Muhurat Trading session, with timings to be announced later.
Additionally, there are several holidays falling on weekends, including Dussehra on October 12. Other stock market holidays for the rest of the year include Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 1, Gurunanak Jayanti on November 15, and Christmas on December 25.
