Is the stock market closed on Dhanteras?
Stock Market Holiday on Dhanteras: Diwali, the festival of lights, kicks off on October 29, 2024, starting with the Dhanteras celebration across India. Although this day is a public holiday in several cities, the stock market will remain open on Tuesday, October 29.
According to the official holiday calendar from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), there is no market holiday for Dhanteras. Trading for equities, equity derivatives, stock lending and borrowing (SLB), currency, and commodities markets will proceed as usual.
What is Dhanteras?
Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali and is a day dedicated to honoring Dhanvantari, the deity associated with health and wellness. According to Hindu beliefs, Dhanvantari appeared from the churning of the ocean, holding a pot of amrita (nectar granting immortality) and a sacred Ayurvedic text. He is considered the divine physician of the gods and an avatar of Vishnu.

Stock Market Performance on Monday
Ahead of Diwali, the Indian stock market saw a notable upswing after last week’s losses. The Sensex rose 837.75 points (1.06%) to reach 80,350, while the Nifty 50 gained 237.10 points (0.98%) to reach 24,417.90.
