The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in Karnataka, detected through routine surveillance. These cases were identified as part of ongoing efforts to monitor respiratory illnesses in India.
The two HMPV cases involved a 3-month-old girl and an 8-month-old boy infant, both diagnosed with the virus after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru with bronchopneumonia. Both infants have since shown signs of recovery.

The ICMR emphasised that HMPV is already circulating globally, including in India, and similar cases of respiratory illnesses have been reported worldwide. No unusual rise in cases has been observed.
Today’s market update
Meanwhile, markets are under pressure, with Sensex and Nifty experiencing sharp declines. Key sectors and top companies have reported significant losses, reflecting patterns seen during the COVID-19 market downturn.
The Indian stock market experienced a significant slump on Monday, with the Sensex dropping 733.05 points, or 0.93%, to 78,490.06. Similarly, the Nifty fell 229.90 points, or 0.96%, settling at 23,774.85.
PSU banks were the worst hit, with the Nifty PSU Bank index plunging 4.26% amid heavy profit-booking. Financial services followed closely, declining 3.28%, and the metal sector also saw significant losses, falling 3.21%, driven by weak global cues.

What is the HMPV virus?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) causes symptoms similar to the common cold, particularly affecting children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Research indicates that most HMPV cases are mild, with most individuals contracting it by the age of five.
How does it spread?
HMPV spreads easily through respiratory droplets, person-to-person contact, or contaminated surfaces. First identified in 2001, it has since become a significant cause of both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Symptoms typically include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.
Signs and Protection Measures
Human Metapneumovirus, similar to other respiratory viruses, causes cold-like symptoms and may lead to flu-like symptoms, particularly in young children and older adults. To prevent its spread, individuals with cough or cold should avoid close contact with others and follow general respiratory infection precautions.
COVID-19 market recovery
The market decline mirrors the March 2020 crash, where indices fell over 30% due to the pandemic. Swift government action and economic reopening helped Sensex and Nifty recover to pre-pandemic levels by early 2021.
