Stock market today: Bulls dominated the opening session on Monday, September 16, with benchmark indices starting in the green. At 9:20 AM, the S&P BSE SENSEX was trading 135 points higher at 83,025.95, while the NSE NIFTY50 gained 34.7 points to trade at 25,391.20.
On the SENSEX, Tata Steel led the gainers with a 1% increase, followed by NTPC and JSW Steel. Conversely, Hindustan Unilever (HUL) was the top loser, falling over 2%, followed by Nestle.
Shares of rice companies like KRBL and LT Foods saw gains after the government removed the $950 per tonne minimum export price on basmati rice. Meanwhile, Dixon Technologies rose 1.8% after its subsidiary, Padget Electronics, signed an MOU with Asus India to manufacture notebooks.
SpiceJet shares jumped over 3% after shareholders approved a resolution to raise ₹3,000 crore. The airline is aiming to tackle its financial and operational challenges with the new funding.
In sector performance, power and utility stocks saw significant gains, with the BSE Utilities and POWER indices rising 1.38% and 1.63%, respectively. Globally, Asian stocks had a cautious start, with holidays in several countries contributing to thin trading conditions.
