2024 Holiday Update: Stock Markets Stay Open on Raksha Bandhan

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will operate as usual on Monday, August 19, despite it being the festival of Raksha Bandhan. While Raksha Bandhan is widely celebrated across India, the stock markets follow a regular schedule, closing only on major national and religious holidays.

On August 19, trading will continue across all segments, including equity, derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB). Additionally, trading in currency and interest rate derivatives segments will also remain active.

For the remainder of 2024, there are four stock market holidays left. These include Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Diwali Laxmi Pooja on November 1 (with special Muhurat Trading), Gurunanak Jayanti on November 15, and Christmas on December 25.

The stock market operates Monday through Friday, except for declared holidays. Market timings are as follows: the pre-open session runs from 09:00 AM to 09:08 AM, regular trading from 09:15 AM to 15:30 AM, and the closing session from 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM.

Recently, the Nifty and Sensex indices ended a two-week losing streak, reaching their highest levels since August 2. On Friday, the Nifty rose by 1.64%, closing at 24,540.55, while the Sensex climbed 1.68% to finish at 80,436.84.

Raksha Bandhan 2024, celebrated on August 19, symbolizes the strong bond between siblings. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers’ wrists, praying for their well-being, and brothers, in turn, promise to protect their sisters. The festival is marked by love, joy, and the exchange of gifts, making it a cherished tradition in Indian households.
