What is the meaning of dividends?

Dividends are one way for investors to receive a return on their investment in addition to potential capital gains from the appreciation of the stock’s value. Not all companies pay dividends, and some may choose to reinvest earnings back into the business for expansion or other purposes. The decision to pay dividends is ultimately made by a company’s board of directors.
