If you trade or invest in Indian markets, it helps to know in advance when the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) are closed or operate under special conditions. Stock market holidays falling on Saturday & Sunday
Some official exchange holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, so they do not add an extra weekday closure. However, they are still part of the official 2026 holiday calendar.
Date | Day | Holiday | Applies to |
15 February 2026 | Sunday | Mahashivratri | NSE, BSE |
21 March 2026 | Saturday | Id‑Ul‑Fitr (Ramadan Eid) | NSE, BSE, MCX |
15 August 2026 | Saturday | Independence Day | NSE, BSE, MCX |
08 November 2026 | Sunday | Diwali Laxmi Pujan (Muhurat Trading) | NSE, BSE, MCX |
Note:
- On 08 November 2026, normal equity trading is closed, but Muhurat Trading is usually held for a short window; NSE/BSE publishes exact timings through a circular.
- MCX may also run a special commodity session on Diwali, Laxmi Pujan, as per their own circular.
What is a settlement holiday?
A settlement holiday is a day when stock exchanges remain open for trading, but bank settlement operations are closed because the banks are not functioning. In India, this commonly happens when a public holiday coincides with a weekday and the banking system is shut, even though the exchange can still technically trade.
How does a settlement holiday affect traders?
- No impact on trading activity:
You can still place, modify, or cancel orders on settlement‑holiday days; the market runs as usual. - Impact on pay‑in/pay‑out and funds:
Because banks are closed, settlement (pay‑in and pay‑out) gets postponed to the next working bank day. This can delay:- Outgoing fund transfers (withdrawals).
- Incoming fund credits (deposits, sale proceeds).
- Collateral and margin‑related banking operations.
- Options and futures expiry:
If a settlement holiday falls close to expiry, it may slightly shift the exact timing for cash‑settlement inflows, but it does not change the expiry date of the contract. - Why it matters for beginners:
Many new traders mistakenly assume that if the market is open, all bank processes are live as well. A settlement holiday can cause unexpected delays in fund transfers, so it’s useful to check the settlement holiday calendar whenever you plan large deposits, withdrawals, or margin‑sensitive trades.
