How often are index constituents changed?

Index providers review their indices periodically — typically twice a year for the headline benchmarks — and add or remove companies based on published rules covering size, liquidity and free float. Corporate actions such as mergers or delistings can also force an off-cycle change.

Can I invest in an index directly?

You cannot buy an index itself. You can take exposure to it through an index fund or an ETF that tracks it, or through index futures and options if you trade derivatives. Why is the level here different from what I see elsewhere?

Index data on this page is for informational purposes and is refreshed from a market data feed, so it can lag the exchange by a short interval and can differ slightly from another provider using a different feed. What is the difference between High/Low and 52-week High/Low?

The High and Low shown here are for the current trading session — the highest and lowest levels the index has touched today. A 52-week High/Low covers the past year, which is a much wider range and is used to judge where the index sits within its longer-term trend.

What does an index level actually tell me?

An index level is a single number that summarises how its whole basket of shares is doing. On its own the number has no rupee meaning — what matters is the direction and size of the move against the previous close, which is what the Day Change and Change Percent figures on this page show for BANKEX.

What are the constituents of an index?

Constituents are the individual companies that make up the index. Each one carries a weight, so a large company moving 1% shifts the index far more than a small one moving 1%.
