Qatalum Shutdown Impacts Aluminium Market

Shares of aluminium producers including Hindalco Industries, Vedanta, and NALCO came into focus on March 4, 2026. The spotlight follows Qatalum’s controlled shutdown of aluminium production.

Qatalum, jointly owned by Hydro and Qatar Aluminium Manufacturing Co., halted operations after its gas supplier signalled a forthcoming stoppage. A full restart could take 6-12 months or more.

The company issued a force majeure notice to customers. The disruption directly affects global aluminium supply levels, tightening availability and pushing up prices on the London Metal Exchange.

Qatalum has a nameplate primary aluminium capacity of 636,000 metric tonnes and casthouse capacity of 664,000 metric tonnes. The plant is fully integrated with smelter, casthouse, carbon plant, and gas-fired power plant.

Iranian Missile Strike on Qatar

On March 3, an Iranian ballistic missile struck the U.S. military base at Al-Udeid, Qatar, as Tehran targeted locations across the Gulf in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli actions.

Qatar’s Defence Ministry reported two missiles targeted the country. Air defence systems intercepted one missile, while the second struck Al-Udeid Qatari Base without causing any casualties.

The incident underscores rising tensions in the Gulf. Qatar confirmed no casualties at the base, and security measures remain active to monitor further threats in the region.
