Govt Sets Minimum Penicillin Import Price
The government is in the final stages of approving a Minimum Import Price (MIP) for Penicillin-G (Pen-G), a key raw material for antibiotics, to support domestic manufacturers.
The MIP can help domestic Pen-G producers survive price undercutting by Chinese suppliers and make Aurobindo Pharma’s investment under the PLI scheme commercially viable.
Hyderabad-based Aurobindo Pharma, one of India’s largest antibiotic makers, has invested over Rs 2,500 crore in Pen-G/6-APA facilities to enhance local self-sufficiency in fermentation-based APIs.
International Pen-G prices have dropped to around $13.5 per kg, below the domestic production cost of over $25 per kg, making local production unprofitable without government support.
The proposed MIP will be time-bound, typically one year, applying only to imports for domestic consumption, while export-linked imports will remain unaffected, preventing trade barriers.
Pen-G is critical for manufacturing antibiotics such as Amoxicillin and Ampicillin, essential to India’s healthcare system, and the MIP aims to strengthen local production under the PLI scheme.
