Shein Returns to India with Reliance Retail’s Backing
Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Retail has reignited competition in India’s fast fashion market by re-launching Shein. With prices starting at ₹199 and an online-first strategy, Shein aims to challenge established players like Tata Group’s Trent-owned Zudio and Nykaa Fashion.
Shein was previously a popular fashion brand in India before its ban nearly five years ago. At its peak, it received 20,000-50,000 daily orders. Now, with Reliance Retail’s backing, the brand has re-entered the Indian market, potentially reshaping the country’s fashion retail landscape.

The fast fashion segment in India has been growing at a rapid pace, with a 30-40% year-on-year expansion, significantly outpacing the overall fashion market’s 6% growth in FY24. Industry estimates suggest that the segment could be worth $50 billion by FY31.
Shein’s strength lies in its ultra-fast manufacturing model, introducing new designs in just 5-7 days, much faster than the industry standard of 1-2 weeks. This quick turnaround enables it to stay ahead of fashion trends and cater to evolving consumer demands efficiently.
Unlike India’s leading fast fashion retailers such as Zudio, Intune, StyleUp, and Yousta, which focus on a strong store network, Shein’s online-first approach sets it apart. This digital strategy aims to capture India’s growing e-commerce market and attract price-conscious shoppers.

The re-launch of Shein has sparked intense competition in the industry, with Trent and Nykaa facing immediate pressure. Despite competition, Shein’s ability to scale its operations will depend on its supply chain efficiency and customer acquisition.
While existing brands have well-established networks, Shein’s strategy of leveraging Reliance Retail’s digital and logistical infrastructure could drive its expansion. With an aggressive pricing model and digital reach, Shein’s return signals a transformation in India’s fast fashion industry.
