Introduction:
Nuclear energy stocks rose as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a 100GW nuclear energy target by 2047. This ambitious goal is key to India’s energy transition, marking a significant shift towards clean, sustainable energy sources for the future.
The Finance Minister emphasized the need for private sector collaboration and stated that amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act would be pursued to facilitate this partnership. This move aims to streamline nuclear energy development and investment.
Additionally, a dedicated Nuclear Energy Mission will be established, with a focus on Small Modular Reactors (SMR). An outlay of ₹20,000 crore has been allocated for research and development, targeting the operationalization of at least five indigenously developed SMRs by 2033.
