US Imposes 126% Solar Duty

Shares of Waaree Energies Ltd., Premier Energies Ltd., and Vikram Solar Ltd. fell up to 15% on February 25 after the Trump administration announced preliminary duties on solar imports.

The United States set preliminary duties of 126% on solar imports from India. Duties ranged between 86% and 143% for Indonesia and 81% for Laos.

The US Commerce Department said the rates were based on foreign subsidies that allowed exporters to undercut domestic solar producers in the United States market.

These duties are separate from reciprocal tariffs previously imposed by the Trump administration. A 10% universal tariff took effect before it was raised to 15% over the weekend.

Solar imports from India were valued at $792.6 million in 2024, over nine times 2022 levels. Citi analyst Vikram Bagri said high duties could restrict US market access.
