₹413.18 Cr Tax Demand for FY 2017-18
Tata Capital received a ₹413.18 crore income tax reassessment demand for FY 2017-18 from the Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Circle-2(3)(1), Mumbai, comprising ₹209.52 crore in tax and ₹202.72 crore in interest. The order was issued under Section 143(3) read with Section 147 of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
The demand pertains to Tata Capital Financial Services Limited (TCFSL), which was merged into Tata Capital with effect from April 1, 2023. The assessing officer credited taxes paid by Tata Capital Limited (₹16.36 crore) instead of TCFSL’s actual tax payments of ₹225.89 crore, causing the shortfall and consequential interest levy.
Tata Capital maintains the demand is not maintainable as it is based on apparent computation errors. The company plans to file a rectification application and appeal and does not expect any material financial or operational impact from the order.
